To be able to pass university entrance examinations, job selections and national and international scholarships, applicants who apply are usually required to have a certain score on an English test.
This requirement is of course intended to measure how capable the selection participants are in communicating using English, both verbally and in writing. In Indonesia, so far there have been various tests that can be used to measure a person's English proficiency. Among the most common types of English proficiency tests are the TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS. Each institution, company and university that opens the selection often proposes different score requirements for the three types of tests. What makes the three different? The following is the explanation. TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language) TOEFL is one of the most popular English language proficiency tests in Indonesia. One of the English language course services, English First defines TOEFL as a test to measure English language skills with an American accent (non-native). TOEFL is usually used as one of the requirements for prospective students applying to universities in the United States and Canada. The TOEFL test is held by ETS (Educational Testing Service), an institution in the United States. These test takers come from all over the world. TOEFL test results can be valid for two years after the score is issued. There are two types of TOEFL tests, namely TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) and TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test). In the ITP TOEFL, test scores will be institutional in nature or only apply to certain institutions and certain countries. The maximum TOEFL ITP score is 500 to 600. The categories of questions tested in the ITP TOEFL include Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. TOEFL ITP is usually used in Asian countries. Meanwhile, TOEFL IBT is a TOEFL test using CBT (Computer Base Test) where the test results will be directly connected to ETS via the internet. The maximum TOEFL IBT score is 120. The categories tested in the TOEFL IBT are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The cost to take the TOEFL IBT tends to be more expensive than the ITP TOEFL, which is around 190 US Dollars or the equivalent of around IDR 2.4 million. TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) TOEIC is also hosted by ETS. This test is done to measure the ability of English especially to communicate. As reported by Exam English, the questions tested in the TOEIC are based on official communications in an international environment, such as language for meetings, travel, and telephone conversations. The categories tested in the TOEIC are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. To do the TOEIC, it costs approximately 85 US Dollars or around IDR 1.2 million. The maximum score in this test is 990.The TOEIC score determines a person's proficiency level, which is as follows: 905 - 990: International Proficiency 785 - 900: Proficiency at Work Plus 605 - 780: Limited Job Skills 405 - 600: Basic Proficiency Plus 255 - 400: Basic Skills 185 - 250: Proficiency of Memorization 10 - 180: Has No Usable Skills IELTS (International English Language Testing System) Unlike the TOEFL, in IELTS, the English language proficiency tested is British or British. Generally, the IELTS test is accepted by institutions in Australia, UK and New Zealand. According to English First, the IELTS exam is administered by Cambridge University, British Council and IDP Education Australia. There are two versions of IELTS, namely the academic version which is usually used to register for college and the general training version which is used to apply for jobs or the need to migrate to countries in Europe, such as the UK, New Zealand and Australia. The maximum score for the IELTS exam is 40 with each section measured on a scale of 0-9.
